Steven Wang
Born in 1997, Steven Wang graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2021 and is presently an artist based in Hong Kong. His work primarily focuses on the analysis of images through the medium of oil paint. These images can appear in any form and from anywhere–film stills, art historical references, found photographs and personal snapshots–and their subject matter can be as varied as their origins: the only criterion is that the artist should find a captivation within the image, a captivation which his painting process aims to undo. Wang does not have a specific working process–every painting is started anew as an individual investigation. Some subject matter–intricate patterns of windows, mise-en-abyme of perspectives–intuitively require meticulous application while others intuitively looser ones. The image is for Wang both the enemy and the guide, resulting in works that demonstrate a rare dynamism that vacillates between struggle and tenderness. His influences in painting include Avigdor Arikha, Luc Tuymans and Vilhelm Hammershøi. Other influences include Byung-Chul Han, Giorgio Agamben, Roland Barthes and Wong Kar-wai.
