Stefan Peters
Stefan Peters’ compositions are as much phenomena as they are illusions. From their undeniable factuality – the brushed, smoothed, stretched paint; the radiant colors – arise majestic and ethereal landscapes. Yet, from these material and visual realities – which already captivate our gaze – there instantly emerges a shift toward unreality and suggestion. A sense of disorientation occurs. Don’t these vast, airy, enveloping, and silent spaces ultimately stand as theaters of absence, silence, and suspended time?
Just as we are about to enter the sketched pathways and wander the sinuous trails of these panoramas, an unyielding realization sets in: no defined entry is offered to us. Like the brushed gestures of the artist, our gaze glides across the canvas in undulating movements. Stefan Peters seems indeed to invite us to drift, even to daydream, so that, ultimately, we surrender ourselves to a deeper, internal experience. His ‘Vistas’ – symmetrical representations with ambiguous mirror effects – seem to sustain this proposal. Deployed with balance around a clearly drawn median, they are both Here and Elsewhere. Beyond painting, beyond the notion of landscape, Stefan’s work invites us to walk with him through the labyrinthine paths of the mind.
